Blog 3


Microsoft Word has been something I have personally used for as long as I can remember. I have been required to use the program due to school assignments and a few personal assignments. I have mostly used the program for large papers and small discussion board assignments I have to do for my classes. I am familiar with most  basics within the  program such as fonts, colors, indents, alignments and more, I took a college course on computer programs that taught me a lot about word and many awesome tricks and shortcuts you could use but I have since forgotten a lot of that information I believe because I rarely use anything other than basic formatting when I do use word. I have seen teachers create syllabus’, assignments, handouts, exams, quizzes and more. I didn’t realize how much work went into a teacher creating a handout correctly and being sure it was appealing and easy to read at the same time until the most recent assignment of creating a class newsletter.

            My experience with copyright and fair use of material began around when I began college. Although plagiarism was not accepted during elementary though to high school as well, but I don’t feel it was taken as seriously as in college where punishment could be as bad as being removed from your school. I also began to write more serious papers in college which required you to cite your recourses and give credit to those who deserve it in your paper and at the end in your works cited. I also feel how copy right affects me when I have to pay for a textbook in order to read/use some of its content whereas in high school for example those books were provided, and I didn’t realize how important copy rights were. As a teacher I was worried about using content that was not mine to help supplement my students learning butt because of the fair use of materials I feel much more comfortable knowing it is easily possible to use small bits of others content.

            I feel privacy is a big issue with students especially when most aren’t completely comfortable with others reading their work for example. I would be sure that any work done by each student in my class was only reviewed and graded by myself and stay away from any help with those tasks by other students or assistants. I would never ask/force any of my students to share work with the class, although I would make it clear that if there were any students open to sharing, they would be more than welcome to do so.
            Academic honesty is the use of content that is not yours to cheat, and something I would take very seriously in my classroom. I believe it is important for each student to have their own work and effort put into any assignment or exam to ensure I get a good read on what they are exceling in and what areas they may need some help in. The students in my class would have clear knowledge as to the consequences that would follow such academic dishonesty. If possible, I would also use programs such as “turn it in” to help me catch any assignments that may not be original content.
            Cyberbullying is a specific kind of bullying that occurs online and is sometimes very hard issue to fix. I believe that making students aware of this issue and how to respond to it would be best way of dealing with it. Making sure students know they do not need to listen to any negative comments online and can simply delete and not allow the problem to continue and they should contact an adult to report these negative environments in the cyber web.

  1. Hi Amanda! I agree with you, copyright definitely didnt become as big of an issue until college and when I began writing bigger research papers and learned how serious the issue of copyright was, it made me nervous!

  2. We definitely have almost exact experiences when it comes to Microsoft products and copyright. It made me feel relieved as well learning about copyright and the specifics of what is acceptable for teachers. I still rather try to attempt to use most of my own material but that isn't always possible of course.

            I have learned so much from this class that I will definitely be using in other classes as a student and in my own that one day I will be facilitating. Although I have learned so much there is always so much more to add to your knowledge. I would love to learn a lot more about excel because I know very basic functions and I know there is so much deeper content that I can get into that could be so useful. I found a website actually created by a past teacher of mine and found lots of cool elements to it. First of I love that she calls her classroom “The Happy Room” creating an inviting positive space for her students. She has separate pages for each levels of classes she teaches including, AP Macroeconomics/Government, Honors/Gifted American History, and Honors/Gifted Economics/Government. Under these pages she includes sections explaining what they did the past week in class, homework assignments, important due dates, important links for homework, and any upcoming events. She also includes separate pages for Scholarship/College Information, an About Me, and Contact Me. Open education is a movement focusing on providing many resources, tools and practices free of legal, and financial barriers allowing individuals to use, share and adapt content digitally. Giving those with limited resources and financials a chance to enhance their teaching and learning abilities with more available up to date information. I have personally in the past used Khan Academy an example of an open education source to supplement my own learning abilities. With this source people can have an extra resource of teachings to help motivate their learning and gain quality educational practices for free. Khan Academy provides educational content in areas such as math, science, computing, arts & humanities, economics and even test prep. Open content is content available to anyone for free and gives the person the freedom to retain, reuse, redistribute, revise, and remix the content without the fear of invading on copyrighted content.
