There are many different influences that can push teachers and students to use technology especially todays society. In today’s society there is technology everywhere we go with phones, TV’s, tablets, etc. Because technology is everywhere it is inevitable for students and teachers to bring it into the classroom. Teachers can use the technology in ways to better reach he students and get the lesson to them easier.

An organization called the International Society Technology in Education (ISTE) which supports technology use in educational contexts worldwide. This organization publishes two journals as well as holds an annual conference. The student standard of an empowered learner stood out to me which states that “Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.” Talking of how students have autonomy in their own learning. I am personally not super creative so the standard I felt was outside my current skill set was the creative communicator which states “Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.”.

There is a term called “digital native” which are people born into a time when digital technology was already around. I believe this term is something I would agree with and would say makes sense. There is also a term “digital immigrants” meaning who are those who when they were born did not have technology and were introduced to technology later in their life. I do notice that there are some “digital immigrants” struggle more with technology then almost all “digital natives”. I see that the digital immigrants will move more slowly when typing, using a smartphone, struggle on online programs, etc. Whereas digital natives I feel move quicker and because they have been brought up with the technology all around them. Although I do feel the digital immigrants can learn to use technology just as well as any digital native. I anticipate that I will be at the same level of technological abilities I think I will continue to adjust and learn as technology evolves.

  1. Hey Amanda!

I really liked the example you posted about for the digital native section of this blog. When I think about it, there are many older people that I know, my mom especially, who don't know how to utilize technology to the best of their ability. My mom knows how to use her computer pretty well, but when it comes to her smartphone, she tends to type very slowly with only one finger. She is also always asking me questions about how to do things on her phone like send GIFs and FaceTime. It is really interesting to see these differences in terms of technology use abilities between generations, as one day we too will be considered digital immigrants rather than digital natives.

  2. Amanda,

I most definitely agree with the fact that technology is absolutely everywhere and that it does sometimes make our lives easier. I too am not the most creative person, but I feel like with the help of upcoming and existing technology, we can make almost anything look nice, which by the way, your blog is cute! Like Gabi's mom, my mom is pretty decent at using technology but nonetheless still struggles with some of its most advance uses.

I have learned so much from this class that I will definitely be using in other classes as a student and in my own that one day I will be facilitating. Although I have learned so much there is always so much more to add to your knowledge. I would love to learn a lot more about excel because I know very basic functions and I know there is so much deeper content that I can get into that could be so useful. I think it could be greatly useful in keeping grades and other info that is important for me in my future class as an educator.

I found a website actually created by a past teacher of mine and found lots of cool elements to it. First of I love that she calls her classroom “The Happy Room” creating an inviting positive space for her students. She has separate pages for each levels of classes she teaches including, AP Macroeconomics/Government, Honors/Gifted American History, and Honors/Gifted Economics/Government. Under these pages she includes sections explaining what they did the past week in class, homework assignments, important due dates, important links for homework, and any upcoming events. She also includes separate pages for Scholarship/College Information, an About Me, and Contact Me. I believe these are great additional pages with information that may not be specific to the class or its content but can still be helpful to a student.    https://mrslowd.educatorpages.com/ I relate this blogging experience to past class assignments called discussion boards. In these disc...

A flipped classroom is a new concept and approach to teaching and learning. In a flipped classroom instead of the classic instruction in class time and homework to practice while at home a teacher can decide to flip their classroom to where the students access instruction and lessons at home and practice their work while in the classroom with the teacher. When using this technique and style of instruction the student has more useful time and access to their teachers with videos first while at home then again in the classroom giving more options with more purpose learning. I believe this can help students more especially since the number of students going home and returning with no homework done is increasing. The digital divide has to do with the lack of access people have to technology who may not be as privileged as others and may not have as much access to technology as others. Without access to technology there may be students who get put behind being unable t...
